It’s rare that you have the delight of seeing a star in it’s early stages, before it shines So bright that everyone can see it’s wonder. Not long ago, I was lucky enough to stumble upon such a thing, at the old Lava Lounge of all places, where Lo-Fi Sugar played to an intimate crowd that watched dumstruck as she sang to the magical melodies emanating from her tiny laptop; a sultry and sexy voice backed by a perfect melding of sugary acoustic jams and raw electronica. There was a strange theatricality to the whole thing, Sugar performed a whole song, “we Wait”, a top a stool, punching the keys of an ancient typewrite to form the beats to her jam. Since then, she’s gone on to headline at the Viper Room on 103.1’s Check One, Two evenings, and serenade the masses of Berlin with Paul Van Dyk backing her. Soon, this February 1st in fact, you’ll get to lay your eyes on her first video offering, a zany and bloody werewolf tale set to her infectious tune “Come on.”
